I’m Kate O. Welcome to my blog.
I’m half Southerner and half West-Coaster. I grew up in the South but spent my summers in California; I went to college in the South and graduate school in the Pacific Northwest. Whenever I’m on one side of the country I’m continually plagued by my longing to be on the other side. I currently live in Alabama so I spend my hours lately haunted by visions of grey skies and towering, moss-covered Douglas Fir trees.
I’m a very introverted and bookish nerd, so my job as a college English instructor allows me to nourish my literary side while it also demands that I get over my fear of public speaking. I won’t write about my job here too much, but I will say that I feel incredibly fortunate to have found a career doing what I love: reading and writing and talking about books.
Because I’m not going to be writing about work here, you can expect to read a lot about my adorable dachshund; my fat ornery cat; my favorite books, music, movies, and shows; my newly re-discovered love of running & sports (as I write this I’m planning my first full marathon – December 2010, it looks like!); and my experiments in mostly vegan cooking.
I hate: hot, humid weather; unsolicited advice; messy lettuce on sandwiches; popcorn; and shin splints.
I love: coffee; whiskey; postmodern fiction; baking bread; light drizzly rain; rocky coastlines; the soft, warm ears and sad eyes of a hound dog; going to bed early to read; and getting up early to run before the world wakes up.
